Kansas City Star staff wins Triple Crown

Holly Lawton and her staff at The Kansas City Star headlined the women who won awards last week from The Associated Press Sports Editors.

The Star was the only newspaper in the over-250,000 circulation division this year to win the Triple Crown, receiving Top 10 recognition for its daily, Sunday and special sections. It is The Star's third Triple Crown in the past five years.

Lawton, associate managing editor for sports at The Star and an AWSM member, directed a staff that won a record 12 awards at the 2008 APSE Contest Judging in Orlando.

Six other newspapers with female sports editors received recognition for their sections, including former AWSM president Kim Pendery (Tampa Tribune) and 2005 Mary Garber Pioneer Award winner Cathy Henkel (Seattle Times). See the full list at the bottom of this release.

Women won recognition in a dozens of categories at the judging.
