The Association for Women in Sports Media is no longer accepting applications for the 2023 AWSM Scholars program. The application period closed on Oct. 16.
AWSM will award female college students a $1,000 scholarship and placement in a paid internship in one of four fields: sports writing, broadcast production, social media and media relations. Sports Illustrated and Sporting News are among the 2023 returning internship hosts, while AWSM welcomes first time host Bally Sports to the employer lineup. More host employers will be announced in the coming weeks. The winners will be announced this winter.
Since 1990, AWSM has placed more than 200 female college students interested in sports media careers in paid summer internships.
AWSM thanks the following donors for their generosity and ongoing support: Christine Brennan, Martin Doerfler, Kristin Huckshorn, Myra MacPherson, Jim Jenks, Tom Jolly, Jorge Rojas and the Associated Press Sports Editors.
We are holding two Ask the Experts virtual panels to help with the application process. The first will feature former AWSM Scholars on Monday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. ET for members of AWSM's 18 student chapters. Please message your school's chapter for RSVP details. The second panel will feature hiring managers on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 8 p.m. ET and is open to any active student member looking to apply to the 2023 AWSM Scholars class.
Who is eligible?
The program is open to female college students who have completed at least one year of college (sophomores and above; grad students are also eligible). Students graduating in 2023 are allowed to apply.
Does it cost anything to apply?
There is no application fee, but you must be an AWSM student member to apply. Our student memberships cost $25. You will be eligible if you begin your membership application by the internship application deadline. Membership takes two business days to process.
When is the deadline?
The deadline for the 2022 program is Oct. 16, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. PT.
The application period for the 2024 program will open next year in the fall.
What do I need to apply?
Do I have a choice of what type of internship I am offered?
On the application form, you’ll be asked to indicate in which fields you’re interested in working: social media, broadcast production, sportswriting or media relations. You can choose more than one field.
If I’m offered an internship, will I have to move?
While some internships may require the Scholar to be based in the city in which the company is located, several of our internships are now remote opportunities following shifts in the workplace caused by the pandemic.
Are the internships paid?
Yes, the internships are guaranteed to be paid.
