VP/Convention Philadelphia 2009, Outreach
Nicole Vargas has worked in the sports department of The San Diego Union-Tribune since 1999, covering high school and college sports as well as working with the section's newly-formed multimedia team. Vargas serves on the executive board of the California Scholastic Press Association, teaching at the organization's annual summer high school journalism workshop at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She is also a member of the California Chicano News Media Association and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. A 1999 graduate of the University of California, San Diego, Vargas began her career at The Riverside Press-Enterprise. An AWSM member since 2001, Vargas co-hosted AWSM’s 2005 convention in San Diego. She also has served as a state coordinator.
